Steps From Where Her Son Died, Kendrec McDade’s Mother Thanks the Community for “Standing by Me”

At the culmination of a three-mile long Palm Sunday peace procession in Northwest Pasadena, the mother of an unarmed black youth who was killed by Pasadena police stood steps from where her son died and thanked the community for standing by her.

Anya Slaughter, choking back tears at first, said she “has grown this past year” and “opened up” as she spoke to an almost reverential crowd gathered on Sunset Avenue at the spot where her son, Kendrec McDade, was shot and killed in 2012.

“I want to thank the community, I want to thank my pastor, I want to thank my family first and foremost, for being with me and standing by me,” Slaughter said. “If there’s anything I can do for anybody else, please contact me.”

Although the McDade shooting occurred three years ago, the final report on what actually happened that night has not yet been publicly released. That report remains the subject of an ongoing court battle which erupted last week as attorneys battled over an appellate court’s ruling to seal portions of the report which had been mistakenly made public for nine days.

One of the sponsors of the march, The Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance, has joined the NAACP and the ACLU in the lawsuit against the city to make public the findings in the report.

The Palm Sunday march was organized by a wide-ranging group of churches and community organizations. The marchers called for an end to the war against the earth and for progress in creating just and sustainable cities.

Saying they believe that an environmentally sustainable society cannot be achieved without justice, the marchers walked “an extra mile” to the site where Kendrec McDade was shot.

The march concluded with a brief sermon and a dance performance.
