Work on new street lighting fixtures at various locations in Pasadena will start in October and could be completed by spring 2017, if the City Council approves recommendations on Monday for the proposed project from the city’s Department of Public Works.

Public Works is recommending that the City Council accept the bid submitted by Placentia, Orange County-based Calpromax Engineering, Inc. which offered to construct the new street lights at a cost of $327,000.

The company was the “lowest responsive and responsible bidder” among seven outfits that bid for the project after it was advertised in June, according to an Agenda Report prepared by Public Works Director Ara Maloyan for the City Council.

The City Council will deliberate on the recommendations Monday, August 8, during its regular weekly session.

Based on Public Works specifications, the project will consist of the installation of street lights at various locations citywide.

“The work includes furnishing and installation of street light standards, concrete foundations, high pressure sodium (HPS) and light emitting diode (LED) luminaires and fixtures, conduit and conductors, pull boxes, power feed points and miscellaneous appurtenant work,” the description says.

Public Works, which prepared the plans and specifications for the project, said the project will be funded from existing appropriations under the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for fiscal year 2017. The total cost of the action will be $357,000 including contract administration costs.

The Public Works department has not yet disclosed where the new lighting fixtures will be located.

Calpromax Engineering has indicated the award of the contract will result in two new hires from Pasadena to the present workforce. The project specifications include a Local Hiring Provision, which requires the company to notify labor unions of the goal to employ qualified Pasadena residents for 75 percent of new labor work hours on the project.

Calpromax will be a new contractor for Pasadena and has no previous contracts with the city.
