Strong Santa Ana Winds, Low Humidity Prompt Red Flag Warning in Pasadena as Fires Explode in Ventura and Sylmar

The Pasadena Fire Department has activated Red Flag parking restrictions within Pasadena resulting from earlier National Weather Service predictions of critical fire weather conditions throughout Los Angeles County, confirmed when two major fires exploded overnight in Ventura and Sylmar. The Ventura fire has already destroyed over 150 homes.

Pasadena’s parking restrictions began Monday at 6:00 p.m. and remain in effect Tuesday. No parking is permitted on designated streets in order to both lessen fire ignition danger and to allow passage of fire equipment should a blaze erupt.

Pasadena Fire Dept. spokesperson Lisa Derderian said Monday evening that fire officials will re-evaluate the situation Tuesday morning to see if the alert should remain or be lifted.

The warning is due to strong Santa Ana winds and low humidty, which will likely bring an extended period of critical fire weather conditions through Thursday.

During the peak of the event tonight and Tuesday, there is the potential for damaging wind gusts between 50 and 70 mph across wind prone areas of Los Angeles, with isolated gusts as high as 80 mph possible in the mountains.

The Service said wind gust might down trees and power lines, causing property damage or power outages.

Parking is restricted on posted narrow and/or winding roads within Pasadena’s urban-wildland interface areas to allow for improved Fire Department access and resident evacuation.

Derderian said vehicles parked in violation may be subject to being fined and towed.
