The student athletes came out on top as the Student Athlete Lab hosted it’s Inaugural Annual Scholar Athlete Award Reception on Sunday night at Notte Luna Restaurant in Glendale.

The Student Athlete Lab is a basketball program that helps students hone their basketball skills while also preparing them scholastically through tutoring, SAT/ACT prep courses, life skills and interview skills so they have the tools they need to fulfill their dream of getting a college basketball scholarship.

Not all students can afford to participate in this program so the fundraiser was created so that the “Lab” can continue to provide opportunities to students, regardless of income. The Lab’s founder, Coach Craig Stover says, “I am so happy to be able to give deserving young athletes the opportunity to improve their athletic and academic growth through our scholarship program!”

Honorees included Dr. Patrick Khaziran, whose chiropractic center treats many professional athletes. Dr. Cynthia Thaik, noted Harvard trained cardiologist. Retired NFL standout and Cal Berkley student athlete, Nnamdi Asomugha. Retired NBA standout and UCLA student athlete Marques Johnson.

The star of the evening was Harvard student athlete and Flintridge Prep alum, Kenyatta Smith. As coach Craig says, “Kenyatta exemplifies everything you can have in a student athlete—great player, great student, great person”. Kenyatta was the first recipient of the Scholar Athlete Award.
