It’s an unfortunate — if not entirely unexpected — blow for the Rose Bowl.

The South Korean boy band BTS — which set box-office records at the stadium last May and was set to play another pair of sold-out concerts there this coming May — has postponed its visit to Pasadena in light of the coronavirus crisis, it was announced.

The super group’s “Map of the Soul” tour was scheduled to land at the Rose Bowl for shows on May 2 and 3. But the band representatives, Big Hit Entertainment, announced Thursday that the entire North American jaunt is on hold “in order to make sure that we put the safety of everyone involved first and foremost.”

“The BTS Map of the Soul Tour – North America, originally scheduled to take place from April 25th to June 6th, will be rescheduled to a later date,’’ the band’s announcement said. “All tickets will be honored for the new dates. Information on the new show dates will be shared as soon as possible.

“We are closely monitoring and following the guidance of all local governments regarding public events to ensure we are providing a safe environment for everyone involved as we continue to update our tour plans. We will share additional information regarding these new concert dates shortly.”

The city of Pasadena, L.A. County and the state are all operating under various stay-at-home orders issued by health departments, but as of now those orders don’t extend into May – though they could still be extended, depending on how the virus spreads.

Pasadena’s “Safer At Home” order run through April, as of now.

Last May, BTS grossed more than $50 million from just eight shows on its “Love Yourself: Speak Yourself” tour, which included two shows at the Rose Bowl, according to reports.

At the time, Billboard magazine, citing “BoxScore” figures, reported that BTS’s May 4 and 5, 2019, shows at the Rose Bowl earned $16.6 million and sold 113,040 tickets – making it the highest-grossing engagement in the Rose Bowl’s BoxScore history.

The “K Pop” group beat out the Rose Bowl’s previous high marks, set by U2 and Taylor Swift and co-headlined concerts by Beyoncé and Jay-Z and Eminem and Rihanna, according to that 2019 Billboard report.

At the time, Darryl Dunn, the Rose Bowl’s CEO and general manager, told Pasadena Now there was “this hype and buzz around this band that we haven’t seen before.”

This year’s BTS tour of North America had been scheduled to kick off April 25 in Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium before hitting the Rose Bowl, and then moving on to Dallas, Orlando, Atlanta, New Jersey, Washington D.C. and Toronto before wrapping up June 6 in Chicago.

The band had already canceled concerts in Seoul in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The rest of the band’s world tour, including a series of July concerts in Europe, remains on schedule, at least for now.
