Gaining momentum in its second year, the City, School, Community Work Plan garnered the support of County Supervisor Michael Antonovich to include the Altadena Town Council with the community-wide effort to best prepare Pasadena Unified School District students for the workplace and college this morning.

At Wednesday morning’s annual joint meeting with the Pasadena City Council and Los Angeles County Supervisor, Pasadena’s Human Services and Recreation Director Mercy Santoro announced a similar outreach will be made to the Sierra Madre City Council.

“There has not been a new allocation of funding by any of participants, so we’re not looking for funding, we are looking for influence or impact, and we think that the work plan will be a stronger and more effective program involving the communities with the efforts with public schools if there is a full participation or active interest,” Mayor Bill Bogaard said in a previous interview.

Last month the PUSD Board of Education and the City Council considered what the governance structure of the entire effort should look like. An ad hoc committee will consider it further with two representatives from the Council, two from PUSD School Board and possible appointees from the County as well as Sierra Madre.

“We would like to participate in that, we’ve seen in the previous program with the city and the county working together were able to reach out and maximize our services because we’re serving basically the same population. They all go to Old Town, they all go to the Rose Bowl, so this is a good partnership, and it would be good for the town council to be engaged,” Antonovich said.

The proposed governance structure would have a top level leadership council with the Mayor, City Manager, President of PCC and other decision makers like the PUSD Board President and Superintendent. The midlevel is the “boots on the ground” made up of city staff, school district staff, community partners. The third level includes the parents and community members who will coordinate accountability of the action plans by serving on one of the four results work teams.

“It’s a place based type initiative that encourages the right types of programs and activities happening on school sites and in the community, to ensure a student arrives to and from school with the best resources that are most likely to encourage developmental outcomes for student success. We share a goal to ensure that young people graduate career and college ready,” Santoro said.

The current effort involves culminating the resources located within the city to provide students with summer employment.
