Police said a suspicious device which looked as if it might be a pipe bomb discovered on the grounds of Marshall Fundamental School at about 3:12 p.m. Sunday afternoon led to a police perimeter and evacuations for several hours before the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. bomb squad arrived on scene and declared the device harmless.

In the end, Pasadena Police Lieutenant Max Dahlstein said, the device turned out to be part of an old irrigation line.

Officials decided to err on the side of caution before the determination was made with the assistance of Pasadena Water & Power Dept. personnel.

The incident was centered on the school campus in the 1900 block of Casa Grande Street, which runs along the northern perimeter of the campus, with homes on one side and the campus and field on the other.

Dahlstein said police established a command post near the intersection of Casa Grande Street and Roxbury. There were no injuries during the incident.
