PCC Swim Teams Gain Split In SCC-Opening Meet

The Pasadena City College men’s and women’s swim teams each scored a victory over El Camino College while suffering a defeat in each gender v. Chaffey in a South Coast Conference-opening double dual meet Friday held at the PCC Aquatic Center.

The men defeated El Camino, 170-90, while coming up short v. Chaffey, 158-118. The Lancers women doubled up ECC, 156-75, and couldn’t catch up to Chaffey, 176-96.

On the men’s side, sophomore Cario Liu swam to three event wins, including the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:21.53), the 200 breaststroke (2:12.82) and the 200 individual medley (2:01.44). Freshman teammate Stephen To (San Marino High) captured event victories in the 100 butterfly (53.61) and 200 butterfly (2:00.15). First-year Lancer Aaron Lam (Temple City HIgh) won the 50 free sprint at 22:70 seconds and sophomore Scott Wong took first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.73).

In the women’s competition, sophomore Mikela Velasquez scored a hattrick in event wins with top finishes in the 50 (25.88), and 100 freestyle (57.29), and the 100 IM (1:06.48). Giselle Mendieta easily was victorious in the 50 breaststroke, winning at a 33.05 seconds clip. The 200 medley relay squad of Velasquez, Mendieta, Paige Watroba and Cynthia Martinez took first at 2:05.83.
