Pasadena City College Board of Trustees Area 4 candidate Tammy Silver on Sunday announced endorsements from Dr. Vera Vignes, former Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent of Schools; George Caplan, Esq., former President of the California Community College System Board of Governors; and Mic Hansen, former City of Pasadena Planning Commission Chair.

Vignes was PUSD’s Superintendent of Schools for eight years, between 1992-2000, before serving as the Western Regional Director of America’s Choice – an organization focused on school improvement in support of low-performing schools and school communities.

“I am very proud to publicly endorse Tammy Silver for PCC Board of Trustees,” Vignes is quoted by Silver as saying. “She will be the thoughtful leader we need to address some of the most pressing issues facing our college today. From improving student transfer rates, to making sure the college’s use of tax-payer dollars is completely transparent, Tammy will provide the leadership we need to make sure PCC succeeds.”

George Caplan, Esq. is a former President of the Board of Governors for the Community College System of the State of California, which sets policy and provides guidance for the 73 districts and 115 colleges that constitute the system.

Caplan has also served on boards of several prestigious institutions, including a three-year stint between 2000-2003 as Executive Board President of the University of California Berkeley, College of Letters and Science.

“Tammy Silver doesn’t merely point out the problems confronting PCC today – she provides an action plan with clear solutions aimed at student excellence, stable leadership, and enhanced transparency,” Caplan is reported as saying.

“Tammy will listen to the needs of all students, faculty and staff to ensure that everyone’s experience at PCC is unmatched. That’s why I am very proud to lend my support to her campaign.”

A neighborhood advocate and long-time Pasadena resident, Hansen has served on several City of Pasadena Commissions as well as on the boards of a number of local non-profit organizations. She is the former Chair of both the Planning and the Historic Preservation Commissions. Hansen is a current board member of the West Pasadena Residents’ Association, and the past Board Chair of Pasadena Heritage, Heritage Housing Partners, and Leadership Pasadena.

“Pasadena needs proactive leadership that can offer community-based solutions and collaborative partnerships with our educational institutions. As a longtime advocate for strong schools and a neighborhood leader, Tammy Silver understands the needs of our community and will work hard to make sure that PCC is a leader among California community colleges,” Hansen said. “Tammy is honest about highlighting problems, and is dedicated to finding solutions that make sense. I am looking forward to seeing the creative changes Tammy may put in place.”
