Dozens individuals eager to get tips, tricks and advice about how to land their dream job in the tech industry filled up Pasadena City College’s Creveling Lounge Thursday for Innovate Pasadena’s hands on “Hit Refresh” resume workshop.

“It takes a different set of muscles to be good at finding a job than it takes to be good at our job. Like all things there are trends in resumes, things go in and out of style, to stay ahead of the curve you need to keep your resume fresh,” said workshop leader and General Assembly’s Career Coach Kate Rogers.

“The good news is that the tech space is growing as well, there are more company and more opportunities. But there are also exponentially more candidates, both qualified and unqualified,” explained Rogers.

“Hit Refresh” is the second installment of IP’s new and quarterly series known as “Pasadena Tech Jobs”.

“This event is geared towards those who are starting out in the tech sector or looking to change careers in the field,” said Innovate Pasadena Vice President Beth Kuchar.

Rogers walked participants through a step-by-step approach to crafting a resume that resonates within tech sector and stands out to hiring managers.

“The good news is that the tech space is growing as well, there are more company and more opportunities. But there are also exponentially more candidates, both qualified and unqualified,” said Rogers. “You are your own and your only publicist.”

The key to the workshop is understanding how to navigate the competitive waters of of a burgeoning industry.

“In this new landscape where their is so much competition for each job, people don’t realize that they need to shift their perspective on their resumes, cover letters, etc. and use them not simply as repositories for their past experience but as marketing pieces about themselves that tell hiring managers not where they have been, but where they are going next,” explained Rogers.

“Hit Refresh” also featured panel of leading top tech recruiters including Spokeo’s Head of Recruiting, the Founder of Wallaby Financial, Guidance Software Sr. Talent Acquisition Consultant, OpenX Sr. Technical Recruiter and CEO of Goldstar Events.

“The whole goal is empower the tech community that we have here in Pasadena,” said Kuchar.

Events like “Hit Refresh” are valuable resources designed to cater to the growing tech community in Pasadena and the surrounding area.

“We want to help these talented individuals get jobs locally and improve their skills and float to the top of the pile,” said Kuchar.
