The Fire Family Foundation (www.firefamilyfoundation.org) is hosting a gently worn, new, and used shoe drive in October and November.
“This fundraiser allows donors to support firefighters without opening their pocketbooks,” said Elizabeth Dever, Executive Director of the Fire Family Foundation.
Staff and members of the Firefighters First Credit Union and staff of the LA Financial Credit Union are teaming up to help.
The shoes will be weighed and the Foundation will receive funds for each pound of shoes that are collected.
The goal is to collect 2,500 pairs of shoes – so the Foundation is asking the public for help.
Dever continued, “Donors give their gently used shoes and have a positive impact on firefighters in the USA, and they also have a positive impact on micro-entrepreneurs around the world who are able to make a good living for themselves. My family cleaned out our closets and found 10 pairs of shoes to contribute – only 2,490 to go!”
Donated shoes must be in good condition meaning that the soles are intact, they have laces (if appropriate), there are no holes, they are dry and clean, and they have life left in them. If you would give them to a friend, then they are worthy to submit. Accepted shoes include cleats and hiking boots. Not accepted: ice skates, rollerblades, nor ski boots that attach to skis.
Donated shoes will allow micro-entrepreneurs in developing nations to earn money by selling them. It will keep thousands of pounds of shoes out of local landfills. Everyone benefits – the donors who feel great, the Foundation that earns funds to support firefighters, and the micro-entrepreneurs in developing nations who earn a living!
Drop off shoes from October 8 through November 30, 2019: Mon. – Fri. from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Firefighters First Credit Union, 815 Colorado Blvd., just over Pasadena’s western border in Los Angeles. A collection box is in the lobby across from the elevators. Please tie, buckle or rubber band shoes together (rubber bands are available at the collection box). If you have questions, please call Foundation staff at 323-550-2208.
This shoe drive directly affects firefighters and their families by raising needed funds for the four national core programs of the Fire Family Foundation, which include providing financial support to firefighters, and their families, awarding college scholarships to firefighters’ children, providing disaster relief for firefighters and granting funds to fire charities.
