The Marvelous Wonderettes, the hit jukebox musical created and written by Roger Bean and directed by Robert Marra with Musical director, Sean Paxton will be performed at the Sierra Madre Playhouse on Friday, July 21 ’til Sunday, August 27. The play is produced for Sierra Madre Playhouse by Estelle Campbell and Christian Lebano.
At the 1958 Springfield High School prom, we meet Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy- the Marvelous Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. As audiences learn about their lives and loves, the girls serenade them with classic 50s hits including Lollipop, Dream Lover, Stupid Cupid, and Lipstick on Your Collar. In act two, the Wonderettes reunite and take the stage and perform at their ten-year class reunion. This is where the audience will learn about the highs and lows the young women have experienced in the past decade and are charmed to find that no matter what life throws their way, they will conquer it together. Featuring over 30 classic 50s and 60s hits (including It’s in His Kiss, It’s My Party, Son of a Preacher Man, Rescue Me), The Marvelous Wonderettes will keep you smiling in this irresistible musical trip down memory lane.
This production reunites director Robert Marra and musical director Sean Paxton, the team that delivered Sierra Madre Playhouse’s most popular show ever, Always…Patsy Cline (in 2015). Last year, Robert directed Sierra Madre Playhouse’s Ovation Award winning production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Sean composed original music for our 2017 production of A Wrinkle in Time.
Roger Bean created and wrote The Marvelous Wonderettes. He is the author of several jukebox musicals, among them Life Could Be a Dream, Why Do Fools Fall in Love?, The Andrews Brothers, Summer of Love and more.
The Marvelous Wonderettes premiered in Milwaukee in 1999. It subsequently received successful mountings in Los Angeles and New York. The current production marks its first local staging in many years.
The cast includes Kelsey Boze, Kelly Klopocinski, Kate Ponzio and Maggie Randolph. Costume design: A. Jeffrey Schoenberg. Stage manager: Chloe Madriaga. Assistant stage manager: Lauren Dietzel. Lobby display and exhibits are curated by Diane Siegel.
There will be several free themed events nearby in connection with this production. They are the subject of a separate release.
