The SPPF invites you to be part of this special event on Saturday, May 4, 2019, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available at sppreservation.org. Tickets are $30 per person in advance; $35 at the door at the South Pasadena Historical Museum; children under 12 are free.
Churches have been an integral part of the history and culture of South Pasadena since its inception. Although the city comprises only a few square miles, it is rich with churches representing a variety of styles, including Mission Revival, English Norman, Gothic Revival, Spanish Baroque Revival, and Modern. For the first time ever, the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation (SPPF) is sponsoring an event opening six of the city’s great churches to the public.
Churches on the tour include:
• Grace Brethren Church
• Calvary Presbyterian Church
• St. James Episcopal Church
• South Pasadena Christian Church
• Holy Family Catholic Church
• Oneonta Congregational Church
You’ll be treated to a unique perspective of the interiors of these incredible feats of architecture that have withstood the test of time (and trembling ground). Docent-led tours will discuss each church’s history and rich layers of artistry, much of it hand-hewn, and featuring stonework, stained glass, woodcarving, metalwork, marble and cast statuary, and much more.
You will start the tour with the “Architecture of Faith” exhibition at the South Pasadena Historical Museum. After visiting five churches along Fremont Avenue between 12 pm and 4 pm, you will be welcomed at Oneonta Church on Garfield Avenue for a special docent tour and a final reception, featuring light refreshments.
These churches are sacred spaces, but also historic places with a community basis, and there is sure to be something to be learned at this inspiring and educational event.
