A burglar broke into a Pasadena home last night as the family was out shopping for a Christmas tree and stole a large amount of jewelry and loaded weapons, police said.

Pasadena police Lt. Jim Hettema said the family was away from their home in the 900 block of South Oakland Avenue for only about 45 minutes Sunday afternoon to buy the tree.

When they returned, he said, someone had broken through the home’s glass back door and gotten inside.

“The loss so far is over $100,000 in jewelry, two loaded Smith and Wesson revolvers,” Hettema said. “So a little extra concern on our part obviously, when we get guns on the street.”

The burglary is the second in a few weeks in which burglars have stolen firearms from a Pasadena home.

The suspect in Sunday night’s burglary remains at large.
