A two-alarm house fire in a single-story residence in the 400 block of North Oak Avenue just south of Villa was quickly knocked down Friday afternoon, but left a number of pets dead or missing, a fire official said.

The fire broke out at about 2 27 p.m. Arriving firefighters saw heavy flame and thick smoke and upgraded the incident to two alarms.
Firefighters made quick work of the blaze with knockdown declared at approximately 3:10 p.m.

One dog was rescued from the flames during the firefight, but as the scene was surveyed later it was discovered that four dogs and a cat had perished in the flames.

Four other animals remained unaccounted for on Friday afternoon, officials said.

There were no firefighter injuries, and no one was home at the time of the blaze.

Neither the cause of the blaze or the extent of damage to the house has yet been announced by fire officials.
