In celebration of the United Nations (UN) Day each year, the network of 180 United Nations Association Chapters across the country, including the Pasadena Chapter, host events to highlight the important role the organization plays in today’s world.

The United Nations Association is the largest grassroots organization in the country and will celebrate this year’s theme, “Global Goals, Local Leaders,” where the Pasadena chapter will recognize local nonprofit Young and Healthy for its effort in taking on one or more of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

“We trying to bring all of the global issues and global concerns and current events to the local level,” said United Nations Association Pasadena Chapter President Dr. Wenli Jen.

“When you come to an event like this, it helps to open people’s eyes in terms of what they can do as individuals, but also what they can do in terms of learning about they can get involved on a larger level,” said Jen.

The American Association for the United Nations, the UNA’s predecessor, grew from the League of Nations in 1943.

In 1947, the Pasadena Chapter was formed and became one of the first UNA-USA chapters to be incorporated in 1972. We immediately began an extensive program to educate the general public about the United Nations.

With a membership that covers the San Gabriel Valley, Burbank, Glendale, and Northeast Los Angeles, the Pasadena Chapter is one of the largest in the nation with approximately 144 members.

A focus of the UN Day celebration is sustainable development goals which are 17 separate goals that include poverty, education, gender equality, and more, according to Jen.

Zepphani Smith of the UN Association’s national office will be the featured speaker and take questions from the public.

An advocate for social innovation across sectors, Smith has served in leadership at every level of government working to address current, unresolved issues in civil and human rights.

Smith has also been elected twice to national boards and appointed to local, state, federal, and international positions.

“She’s able to talk a lot about sustainable development goals and what we can do to raise awareness on main issues and how to address them and what are the more tangible action items that can be done,” said Jen.

The UN Association Pasadena chapter will also be honoring local leaders including Mary Donnelly-Crocker, Executive Director of Yount and Healthy.

“There’s a lot of concerns around how do we engage in conversation and even having a safe space to talk about the issues as just American citizens?,” said Jen. “When we come together with a diverse group of people, we can find better solutions for a lot of the issues that are facing us.”

Join the UN Association Pasadena chapter as they commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the ratification of the UN Charter at the local UN Day celebration Tuesday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Alverno Heights Academy located at 200 N. Michillinda Ave. in Sierra Madre.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be made available.
