Pasadena Utility’s Outreach Program also Serves as Training Ground for Students

Pasadena Water and Power will begin its door to door outreach program this month using students to promote low cost water and energy efficiency programs that may be available to customers.

Students from Outward Bound Adventures will be trained in customer service and sent to residential areas throughout Pasadena in pairs, with an adult escort, to find out which customers are eligible for low or no cost assistance from PWP and SoCalGas, according to a statement made by Gurcharan Bawa, PWP’s Interim General Manager.

The department has found door to door canvassing an effective way to interact with customers and answer questions they may have. According to the press release, the students will begin visiting residents within the next four to eight weeks to educate them about the available programs.

The programs include the Energy Utility Assistance Program, which would give customers a discount on their electric utility bills, the Energy Assistance Savings Program, which would install energy saving products such as LEDs at no cost and free water saving programs such as Landscape Turf Removal, according to the media release.

The collaboration between PWP and OBA continues their long standing partnership which allows students to gain experience while learning about energy conservation. The outreach effort is a part of the OBA’s “Careers in Conservation” Program, where inner city high school students are put into real world settings in preparation for employment.

No sensitive data will be collected during the visits, according to a city memorandum.
