The Vallarta Supermarket recruitment job fair held last Tuesday, August 8 attracted a total of 254 potential employees for new Vallarta Supermarket set to open in the former Vons location at Heritage Square on the southwest corner of Orange Grove Boulevard and North Fair Oaks Avenue.

According to William Huang, Pasadena’s Director of Housing and Career Services, of the 254 applicants, 137 were interviewed and 117 are scheduled for interview today. The supermarket is set to open for business on November 1, 2017.

Of the applicants, 176 or 69 percent are residents of Pasadena while 15 or 6 percent are Altadena residents. The job fair held at the Jackie Robinson Center was organized by the Foothill Workforce Development Board (FWDB) in conjunction with the California State Employment Development Department and Vallarta Supermarket.

Needed by the soon-to-be opened 50,000 square-foot supermarket are bakers, cake decorators, meat cutters, meat dispatchers, grocery stockers, receivers, chicharroneros (people who make fried pork belly or fried pork rinds), cooks, taqueros (taco makers), nixtamaleros (those who grind corn to make dough for tacos), scan coordinators, and department managers.

Vons earlier announced it was closing the location and had negotiated with Vallarta to assign the two remaining years of its 10-year lease to the 50,000-square-foot property.

Since April, Vallarta has been constructing a $5 million renovation to the Fair Oaks Avenue location which will have extensive specialty services; Vallarta also plans to keep both the Wells Fargo Bank branch and pharmacy within the store.

Vallarta hired Pasadena firm DL English to design the interior improvements at the site.

Vons meanwhile said it will maintain the three other locations in Pasadena: at 1390 N. Allen Avenue, 155 California Blvd., and 2355 E. Colorado Blvd.

Vallarta will be conducting its new hires orientation at the Foothill Employment and Training America’s Job Center of California starting Tuesday, August 22, 2017.
