Volleyball Recovers and Wins 2nd Straight

Leading 20-13 in the first set Wednesday at South Coast Conference opponent Los Angeles Trade Tech, the Pasadena City College women’s volleyball team entered a phase that has been a familiar trait with the ’14 Lancers. The team lost its focus and was outscored, 12-3, in falling behind 1-0 in the match.

But PCC corrected its issues and went on to win the next three games and second straight match, 23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-15. The Lancers are 2-9 and evened their SCC record at 2-2. LA Trade Tech is 3-3 and 1-3.

The Lancers performed a season-best .253 hitting percentage and the team’s 60 kills is 20 more than any previous match. Leading the way was outside hitter Lahiz Longobardi, who hit her season high .475 in recording 23 kills with just four errors in 40 attempts. Middle blocker Chy’annea Hodges pounded the ball at a .300 clip, making 18 kills (plus two blocks).

Outside hitter Michelle Boyd added seven kills, six digs and a PCC 2014 best six service aces. Middle blocker Carmina Ortiz added seven kills while setter Megan Williams had her best match of the year by totaling 48 assists with 11 digs and three kills.

Pasadena next hosts Long Beach City College in a 6 p.m. conference match on Friday, Oct. 17 at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
