Foothill Municipal Water District (Foothill) recently concluded its 8th annual “Water Is Life” student art competition.

The contest was open to all students, in grades K-12, attending a school located within the service area of a member water agency that Foothill serves. This includes schools primarily located within La Crescenta-Montrose, La Cañada Flintridge, and Altadena.

Foothill narrowed down submissions to the top 10 entries, which will be submitted to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) for further consideration to be included in the 2020 “Water Is Life” student art calendar. Winners will be selected in the fall and honored at a student art exhibit and recognition event sponsored by MWD. Criteria for judging the art pieces consisted of addressing the theme of the contest, originality of the piece and slogan, and degree of visual and word clarity.

On May 20, 2019, the top entries received recognition through a Foothill Board of Directors Meeting. Students received prizes including gift certificates for their accomplishments. The top 10 entries are as follows:

7th – 12th Category
• 1st Place – Joanna S. Kim, 7th Grade, Rosemont Middle School
• 2nd Place – Heidy Hur, 9th Grade, Crescenta Valley High School
• Honorable Mention – Alyssa Minjares, 11th Grade, Crescenta Valley High School
• Honorable Mention – Jacqueline Lee, 8th Grade, La Canada High School

4th – 6th Category
• 1st Place – Olivia Hur, 5th Grade, Monte Vista Elementary
• 2nd Place – Phoebe Lee, 5th Grade, La Canada Elementary
• Honorable Mention – Lauren Park, 4th Grade, Palm Crest Elementary

K – 3rd Category
• 1st Place – Isabella McArthur, 1st Grade, La Canada Elementary School
• 2nd Place – Alexandra Kelly, 2nd Grade, Paradise Canyon Elementary
• Honorable Mention – Azure Chan, 2nd Grade, Paradise Canyon Elementary
• Honorable Mention – Reya Etman, 2nd Grade, Paradise Canyon Elementary

Foothill Municipal Water District provides imported water to Crescenta Valley Water District, La Cañada Irrigation District, Liberty Utilities (formerly Mesa Crest Water company), Valley Water Company, Lincoln Avenue Water Company, Las Flores Water Company and Rubio Cañon Land & Water Association.
