In this the 16th season of Pasadena City College women’s water polo, the Lancers eclipsed a school record for most goals in a game in a South Coast Conference rout over visiting Los Angeles Trade Tech, 26-5, Wednesday at the Aquatic Center.

Pasadena improved to 1-1 in SCC play as Trade Tech lost its season opener.

The previous high was 23 goals in a 2007 victory over Santa Monica College. It’s the sixth time in PCC history a team scored 20 goals in a match, five of those coming against Trade Tech.

The Lancers used proficient shooting to reach the record, scoring on their first 11 shots on goal after taking a 10-1 lead through one quarter. PCC led 15-2 by halftime and 21-2 after three periods. The squad only made missed five shot attempts and finished with an outstanding .839 shooting percentage.

Freshman utility player Ariahn Givens tied a Lancers’ record for assists in a game with seven (Marissa Rack also had seven in a 2012 match v. Saddleback). Frosh utility player Sharon Perez added six assists.

The roll call for PCC scoring is as follows: sophomore utility player Lisa Muñoz tallied seven goals, sophomore center-forward Caroline Liu netted four goals (and four assists) as did letterman center-forward Stephanie Velasco, Perez and Givens scored three each, frosh drivers Megan Mora and Tulasi Hilder-Manahan reached two each, and first-year driver Melissa Arauz-Hernandez had one goal. Reserve freshman driver Erica Sanchez was the only Lancer field player to not score, hitting the post on her only attempt.

Defending the Lancers goal, sophomore goalie Alenoush Aslanin was sharp, making nine saves.

For Trade Tech, Dianna Avila and Beverly Barragan each scored two goals.

PCC’s defense included five field blocks, two each by Perez and Velasco. Givens made a team-high five steals.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, head coach Terry Stoddard’s Lancers return to the pool with a 3 p.m. SCC match at Rio Hondo College.
