Weather in Southern California is expected to be cold and windy as weekend approaches, the National Weather Service said.

Gusty winds are predicted to cross San Gabriel Valley Mountains today, prompting the weather bureau to issue warning for mariners and surfers planning to go across the outer waters today.

The winds are expected to blow between 20 and 35 miles per hour, with 55-miles per hour gusts, the Pasadena Star-News reported.

Southland residents are also warned of crosswinds blowing sand and dust that may restrict visibility for high-profile vehicles. Roadways that could be affected include  the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway, Pearblossom Highway and the Interstate 5 corridor.

Forecasters said that while Wednesday and Thursday mornings will be sunny with a high near 78, patchy fog and cloudy skies will start showing on Thursday evening till Friday.

Rain showers and gusty winds are also to be expected on Friday afternoon till Sunday morning.

Saturday will be mostly sunny with a high near 68, while Sunday will be sunny with a high near 72, the weather bureau said.

The National Weather Service added that a heat wave is possible next week.
