William Christopher, known for his role as the sincere and unassuming Father John Mulcahy on the long-running hit TV show “M*A*S*H,” died at his home in Pasadena on Saturday at 84, according to his son and agent.

John Christopher said his father died from the effects of non-lung small cell carcinoma.

Christopher’s New York-based agent Robert Malcolm told Reuters that Christopher was diagnosed with cancer about 18 months ago. Malcolm also said the actor’s wife of nearly 60 years, Barbara Christopher, was with him at the end.

Christopher portrayed Father John Mulcahy on “M*A*S*H” from 1972 to 1983 and in the follow-up series “After M*A*S*H*” from 1983 to 1985 as part of a legendary cast that included Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, Loretta Swit and Harry Morgan.

Christopher began his acting career by appearing in a variety of regional productions, and eventually a number of Off-Broadway productions, such as The Hostage at One Sheridan Square. His Broadway debut came in Beyond the Fringe, a British revue.

Christopher left the New York City stage for Hollywood to attempt to gain work in television, where he guest-starred in several well-known series, including The Andy Griffith Show, Death Valley Days, The Patty Duke Show, The Men from Shiloh and Good Times (he portrayed the military doctor examining J. J. Evans).

Christopher had recurring roles on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., That Girl and Hogan’s Heroes. He made several guest appearances on The Love Boat. In 1972, Christopher landed the role of Father Mulcahy in the television series M*A*S*H, when the actor who originated the role, George Morgan, was replaced after just one appearance in the pilot episode.

Christopher leaves behind his wife Barbara and his sons John and Ned.
