Published on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 | 7:34 pm

Pasadena resident William Christopher, who played the sincere and unassuming Father John Mulcahy in the “M*A*S*H” TV series, died in his Pasadena residence from cardiorespiratory arrest, according to a TMZ report.

Christopher died on New Year’s Eve at 7:12 a.m. He was 84.

TMZ says it obtained a copy of the actor’s death certificate which showed Christopher also suffered from a small cell carcinoma, which could also be a contributing factor to his death.

His New York-based agent, Robert Malcolm, said he had been diagnosed with cancer about 18 months earlier.

Christopher’s death certificate also notes Christopher was in the entertainment industry for 60 years, the TMZ report said.

He portrayed Father John Mulcahy on “M*A*S*H” from 1972 to 1983 and in the follow-up series “After M*A*S*H*” from 1983 to 1985 as part of a legendary cast that included Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, Loretta Swit and Harry Morgan.

Christopher began his acting career by appearing in a variety of regional productions, and eventually a number of Off-Broadway productions, such as The Hostage at One Sheridan Square. His Broadway debut came in Beyond the Fringe, a British revue.

Christopher left the New York City stage for Hollywood to attempt to gain work in television, where he guest-starred in several well-known series, including The Andy Griffith Show, Death Valley Days, The Patty Duke Show, The Men from Shiloh and Good Times (he portrayed the military doctor examining J. J. Evans).

Christopher had recurring roles on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., That Girl and Hogan’s Heroes. He made several guest appearances on The Love Boat. In 1972, Christopher landed the role of Father Mulcahy in the television series M*A*S*H, when the actor who originated the role, George Morgan, was replaced after just one appearance in the pilot episode.

Christopher leaves behind his wife Barbara and his sons John and Ned.
