Seventy-two students from the Wilson Middle School Drum Corps and Lion Heads Jazz Band, led by conductor Marvin Hatchett, and accompanied by Principal Kyle Douglas, rocked the World Strides Music Program Heritage Festival in San Francisco this past weekend, with both groups winning Gold honors, the President’s award, and three individual awards for jazz band members.

The group worked to raise trip money for about six months, and then clambered aboard two buses (“One broke down on the way up, and the other broke down on the way down,” said Douglas) for the four-day event.

The school’s famed drum corps received a score of 95, the highest of all performing drum corps at the festival, said Douglas, which qualifies them to perform at upcoming Gold level performances planned for New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Nashville in 2019.

“The emotion of the trip, and the satisfaction of learning about what we’re capable of, made it all worthwhile” said Douglas. Over the next few days, Douglas added, the school will decide which of the upcoming performance events to participate in next year, and begin preparing once again.
