PCC Women’s Soccer Guts Out 2-2 Tie vs. East LA College

Playing with only two subs due to injuries and flu Friday, the unranked Pasadena City College women’s soccer team took everything that visiting SoCal No. 10-ranked East Los Angeles College threw at it. Twice, the Lancers rallied from 1-goal deficits and pulled out a 2-2, South Coast Conference tie at Robinson Stadium.

In injury time, sophomore defender Danielle Busta played hero as she scored on a penalty kick for the tying goal. Earlier, Christine Salas took a pass from Michelle Morales and sent a hard rolling shot into the far corner of the net. That tied the score at that point at 1-1 at the 67th minute.

The defender pair of Morales and Busta and goalie Angelique Ulmer were big factors in keeping PCC in the game.  The Huskies dominated most of the first 60 minutes and ended up outshooting the Lancers, 24-6. Despite the lopsided shot edge, Pasadena maintained with Ulmer making 11 saves, including a superb leaping tip away in the 78th minute.

Morales picked up the slack for absent center defender Bailey Shaw-Rodriguez, who had to miss her third straight game due to a foot injury. Morales frequently managed to break up ELAC rebound opportunities and cross pass plays. Busta used her long-range kicking to move the ball out of Lancers’ territory while trying to create scoring chances in the offensive zone.

“It was really one of the great efforts by any team I’ve coached,” said PCC head coach Reggie Rivas. “We were missing two of our best players, including Rachel Schroeder out with the flu, and we had just two subs. I kept telling the players they can do this, that even though East LA was pressuring us, that we were 0-0 at halftime. I switched to a more offensive approach in the second half and we were able to penetrate their territory and get some goals. To come away with a tie in the last minute was great for our us.”

ELAC dropped to 7-3-2 and 4-1-2 in conference play.

The Lancers (4-6-3 overall and 2-3-1 in SCC play) next travel to face Long Beach City College in a SCC match on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Game time is 4 p.m.
