Workers Finishing Emergency Repair Work on Rose Bowl Aquatic Center Sinkhole

Workers are finishing emergency repair work on a sinkhole that appeared on a parking lot near the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.

Pasadena’s Department of Public Works started work on the site on Monday, June 22nd, and wants to finish it on Friday so no weekend activities at the Rose Bowl could be disrupted. The site is currently secured with barricades to maintain public safety as workers from the contractor, Vido Samarzich Inc. based in Alta Loma continue the emergency repairs.

Earlier investigation determined that the sinkhole was caused by a broken sewer main that ran under the parking lot. The emergency work intends to permanently repair the damaged sewer main and the parking lot.

Since Monday, repairmen have been digging and replacing the damaged portion of sewer main, backfilling the area with slurry, and restoring the asphalt pavement of the parking lot. However, upon excavation, it was discovered that an entire portion of the sewer main was missing. The scope of work was increased to include construction of the missing portion of sewer main.

Work will also include trenching for the new main line, coring into an existing sewer manhole and construction of bedding for the new main line.

The preliminary estimate for the work is about $40,000 which includes the construction cost and engineering and inspection costs.

DPW says the Aquatic Center will remain open during construction activities.

For more information about this work, concerned parties are advised to contact John Ramey at Public Works Construction at (626) 744-6912.
