Workshop Reaches Out to Landlords, Encouraging Them to Help Homeless Vets

Vets Advocacy, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, will be co-hosting its second HUD-VASH housing voucher workshop for landlords in Los Angeles County, at the Pasadena Public Library’s Donald R. Wright Auditorium on Wednesday, March 22, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Property owners, property managers and housing officials are encouraged to attend so they could learn how to take an active part in the campaign to end homelessness among veterans.

At the workshop, Vets Advocacy will explain what the HUD-VASH program is and how it is helping veterans get housing. The program is a collaborative effort among the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and local public housing authorities.

Under HUD-VASH (VA Supportive Housing), eligible low-income veterans receive a Section 8 rental voucher plus case management and supportive services from VA.

The HUD-VASH program is particularly significant in Los Angeles County, where Vets Advocacy has launched an outreach campaign called VATheRightWay, which encourages landlords to learn about the West Los Angeles VA Campus and a draft plan to build 1,200 units of veteran permanent supportive housing on campus and transform the area into a 21st century veterans home.

The Los Angeles Housing Services Authority (LAHSA) says almost 3,000 veterans in the county are still without permanent housing.
