Los Angeles’ only annual ballet celebrating the Halloween season returns to the stage on October 26 and 27 with a bigger and bolder presentation than ever before. Sweet Sorrow™A Zombie Ballet, an original ballet choreographed by artistic director Leigh Purtill, continues Shakespeare’s story of Romeo and Juliet following the star-crossed lovers’ deaths and introduces audiences to a cast of witches, werewolves, and zombies.
The Leigh Purtill Ballet Company will perform on Saturday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 27 at 4:00 p.m. at the Manoukian Performing Arts Center, 2495 East Mountain Street, Pasadena. Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s website. Theater information can be found here.
For a sneak preview, watch the Zombie Ballet appearance on ABC-TV’s The Gong Show. In the second episode of the 2017 season, dancers from the Leigh Purtill Ballet Company astounded The Gong Show celebrity judges Fred Armisen and Elizabeth Banks and the show’s hilarious host Mike Myers and were named winners in front of a national television audience.
Sweet Sorrow™ A Zombie Ballet showcases the amateur company’s broad appeal to both the traditional ballet world as well as the horror and fantasy-lover’s community. This unique show is a playful mix of fantastical elements within a familiar framework of storytelling. In addition to their national television appearance, the company performs annually at events in the local horror community, including three years at the area’s premiere horror convention, ScareLA, where they are consistently one of the most popular performance groups and fan favorites. The company performed its signature zombie ballet on August 30 at the Horrible Imaginings Film Festival at The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana.
The nonprofit Leigh Purtill Ballet Company was established in 2017 to expose new audiences to the beauty of ballet as an art form through original and classic dance productions. The company’s Artistic Director, Leigh Purtill, graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Mount Holyoke College and received her master’s degree in Film Production from Boston University. Her teaching career began in Boston, Connecticut and New York; since 2007, she has been teaching all levels of ballet to students in the Los Angeles area.
