12,181,475 have learned with an hour of code, and Paradise Canyon Elementary School students joined a humble movement during the week of Dec. 9-15 to bring computer science to 10 million students worldwide. Three days ahead of schedule, the global goal was reached. Here are a few more staggering stats from code.org beyond those above: 35,000 schools have participated from 167 countries.

More people learned about computer science this week than the last 10 years combined.

More women learned about computer science this week than the last 30 years combined.

More African Americans and Hispanics learned about computer science this week than in the history of the field.

While what the students saw is a snapshot or peek into this world, there are ways for those interested to go further. The school is encouraging parents to explore and share the link below to challenge students to create something with their new knowledge (www.lcusd.net/hourofcode).

Paradise Canyon Elementary School is grateful for the student’s participation and enthusiasm to bring this event to the community’s schools. And a very special thanks to Gayle Nicholls-Ali, Dave Clausen, Ann Omae, Lindsay Bozzani, Vicki Brown, Jeanine Bentz, and Michelle Blessinger, Stephanie Boayes, Lisa Marie DeLeon, Kathleen Salmi, Elizabeth Ramirez, Jenn Mora, Pam Watts, and Jennifer Zine for the parts they played in making this successful from organizing hundreds of students, opening the labs, to loaning iPads for TK and Kinders and to all the teachers who shared their students for one hour. Paradise Canyon Elementary couldn’t have done it without them.
