Alverno Heights Academy is pleased to offer an Open House for prospective families on Sunday, November 20 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Open House will provide prospective students and their families with an opportunity to tour Alverno’s 13-acre campus, visit classrooms, and enjoy the highlights below as well as so much more!

Expanded Academic Program. During Open House, families will be able to visit each department on campus to learn about the courses and curriculum offered within those subjects. Alverno is pleased to offer a total of 25 AP and Honors Courses in every discipline on campus and continues to add more to our curriculum. Currently, a total of 55 percent of Alverno Heights Academy’s student body are currently enrolled in an AP or Honors course. Additionally, Alverno is pleased to have added Advanced Theatre, American Sign Language (ASL), Independent Research in Bioengineering, Engineering and Robotics, Advanced Creative Writing, Zumba, and Meditation to our curriculum.

Partnerships with Caltech. At Alverno, we believe every single student can benefit from a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering, and math. The primary objective of the STEM program at Alverno is to equip and prepare students, not just for admission to outstanding collegiate STEM-related programs, but for the demands of these growing fields beyond the classroom. Alverno students are currently working with Caltech mentors on a number of different projects including the Solar Energy Activity Laboratory (SEAL), Astrophysics and the Pulsar Search Collaboratory, and International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM).

iGEM Team. Alverno Heights Academy’s inaugural iGEM recently returned from the iGEM Giant Jamboree in Boston where they earned a Silver Medal in the competition. This win makes Alverno’s all-girls team one of the top two high school iGEM teams in the country and the number one high school team west of the Mississippi. These young women spent the last eight months conducting authentic scientific research that culminated with presentations and poster sessions in Boston at MIT.

“Lost in Yonkers.” Alverno’s all-girls version of Neil Simon’s “Lost in Yonkers” will run November 10-November 13 at the Carrie Hamilton Theatre at the Pasadena Playhouse. Tickets are currently available in the Alverno office for $15. Visitors at Open House will be treated to a few select scenes from the show throughout the day. They will also be able to learn more about Alverno’s growing performing and visual arts program.

New College Counseling Program. Alverno Heights Academy is thrilled to welcome our new Director of College Counseling, Megan Hoover, to campus. “We are very excited to have Megan Hoover as the new Director of College Counseling at Alverno,” said Julia V. Fanara, Head of School. “Megan brings with her a diverse background in college counseling, which includes experience with both domestic and international students in an all-girls setting. In addition to working with other independent schools across the country, Megan brings extensive knowledge of east and west colleges, as well as others throughout the United States. She believes in the value of taking college tours and works with students to create individual college plans aligned with their goals and interests. Megan’s broad experience with 21st century technology and collegiate opportunities makes her a great fit for our campus and we are grateful to the new insight and perspective she has brought to our community.”

So Much More! While at Open House, students will also have the opportunity to have questions answered regarding the Admissions process, Scholarships and Financial Aid, and general information regarding life at Alverno. Alverno’s Athletic Department will be on hand to discuss all of the options provided to students through sports while Alverno’s student leaders will highlight our unique government. Campus Ministry will share their Christian Service efforts and how they make a lasting impact on the spiritual nature of the campus. Campus tours will be available throughout the day and students, parents, Board of Trustees, alumnae, and faculty and staff will be available for questions! We hope to see you there!

About Alverno Heights Academy

Alverno Heights Academy is an all-girls, independent, progressive Catholic, college preparatory school dedicated to its mission of empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be. Located on the property of the former Barlow Estate in Sierra Madre, California, Alverno Heights Academy was founded in 1960 by the Sisters of St. Francis who sought to create an environment in the San Gabriel Valley where young women could become informed and knowledgeable persons. Later renamed Alverno High School and sponsored by the Immaculate Heart Community, Alverno’s program—academic, spiritual, aesthetic, social, and physical—has been shaped by the staff, trustees, and students. As Alverno Heights Academy once again, the school remains committed to its mission by encouraging each of their young women to be who they imagine.
