The Alverno High School Jaguars soccer team defeated the Sacred Heart of Jesus Comets 8-0 at their home conference game on Friday, January 16. The Jaguars are currently undefeated in the Horizon League with a season record of 4-0. Control in the midfield was key to the game, and the Jaguars’ defense helped give freshman Ayanna Melin her fifth shut-out of the season.

Freshman midfielder Subrina Hamdan scored first for the Jaguars five minutes into the game. Following an initial score, the Jaguars and the Comets traded volleys for most of the first half. But at the 31st-minute, junior midfielder

Caitlyn Delgadillo was able to control possession and score the second goal. Only eight minutes later, sophomore midfielder Larissa Hernandez passed a through ball to junior forward Emma Cavender who collided with a Comets defender. Freshman forward Natalie Scigliano followed through with a shot deflected by the Comets goalkeeper, but Hernandez was there to finish the shot into the net. The Jaguars led 3-0 at half time.

Hernandez’s momentum did not slow down as she scored the Jaguars’ fourth goal at the 51st-minute. Cavender assisted on a goal by team co-captain junior forward Isabel Diaz at the 60th-minute. Hernandez then assisted on a goal by freshman forward Nicole Oberhammer at the 63rd-minute. Cavender wove her way past a charging goalkeeper and a Comets defender for the Jaguars’ seventh goal at the 75th-minute. Diaz punctuated the victory at the 78th-minute by dribbling through traffic to score the Jaguars’ eighth goal.

The Jaguars’ next game is on Friday, January 23, 2015, against the Bishop Conaty-Loretto Wildcats at the Glendale Sports Complex.
