Alverno Jaguars Varsity Soccer Defeats St. Monica Catholic Mariners in CIF-SS Division 7 Wild Card Round
The Alverno Jaguars (the #3-seed in the Horizon League) and the St. Monica Catholic Mariners (#3-seed in the Camino Real Legaue) faced each other in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 wild card round. The Jaguars advanced to the next round with a 3-1 victory.
Sophomore midfielder Subrina Hamdan (4) put the Jaguars on the scoreboard first with her unassisted goal in the 25th minute. The return of sophomore goalkeeper Ayanna Melin (1) from an injury; the dominance of the midfield consisting of co-captain and senior Caitlyn Delgadillo (5), co-captain and senior Isabel Diaz (9), junior Larissa Hernandez (21), and Hamdan; and the strong defensive line of co-captain and senior Dina Der Vartanian (8), junior Nicole Lianto (6), sophomore Nicole Oberhammer (17), and freshman Elisia Bendy (2) secured the 1-0 lead into half-time.
The Jaguars struck again in the 47th minute when freshman forward Beatriz Rivas (16), off a pass from Diaz, scored past the Mariners goalkeeper who came out of the box to try to challenge Rivas. The Mariners were able to maneuver through the seemingly impenetrable Jaguars defense when they scored in the 55th minute; however, a goal by freshman forward Megan Cavender (7), off a pass from Hernandez, in the 82nd minute gave the Jaguars the 3-1 insurmountable lead.
The Jaguars will face the Grace Brethren Lancers, ranked #1 in Division 7, on Thursday, February 18, 2016 in Simi Valley.
