To get a new perspective on symbolism in literature, Immaculate Heart High School English Review students illustrated important scenes and elements from John Steinbeck’s short story “The Chrysanthemums.”
Each student drew a moment or object they found particularly significant and paired it with a relevant passage from the text. They then explained their choices, and how they interpreted the images and the excerpt, to their classmates.
The students’ insightful discussion revealed the depths of meaning in Steinbeck’s evocative story, and the exercise gave them the tools to continue to analyze literature in a more profound way.
