Banned Books Week at Idyllwild Arts Academy

A good book can be so many things: a gateway to another world, a momentary escape from reality or inspiration for us to follow our dreams. Banned books are all too common and the reasons are all over the map. You may think that banned books may be extremely explicit and some may be. Others, however, simply explore topics people are uncomfortable with and are removed from libraries without just cause.

Some banned books include the kid’s series Captain Underpants, the touching teenage novel ,The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and the classic of Mice and Men. If you are not yet surprised by this list, then you should know that other banned books include children’s classics The Bridge to Terabithia, The Great Gilly Hopkins and A Wrinkle in Time.

Other selections include such beloved works as the Harry Potter Series, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and The Outsiders. Other amazing stories that children and adults may miss out on are The Great Gatsby, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Giver.

On the positive side some schools and libraries fight against this injustice during The Banned Books Week by encouraging people to read Banned Books. One of these schools is Idyllwild Arts Academy.

The school was proud to celebrate their Right to Read and created a beautiful display protesting banned books. Idyllwild Arts Academy is a top arts boarding high school. They also offer an impressive summer program to foster the arts and creative thoughts. Idyllwild Arts Foundation’s mission is to change lives through the transformative power of art. Literacy is one of the finest arts and through the banned books protest they are honoring their mission statement.
