Big & Little Sister Program a Beloved Westridge Tradition

Thursday was the first Big & Little Sister gathering of the year! A long-standing Westridge tradition, the Big & Little Sister program is a much loved and anticipated part of every school year. Although the events and grouping have varied over the years, the program’s core value remains the same: to unite students cross-divisionally and build a sense of community and sisterhood.

The Big & Little Sister program began in 1971 as an annual picnic held on Ranney lawn in September. Organized by the Student Relations Heads, an Upper School student, the “Big” sister, was matched with a Lower or Middle School student, the “Little” sister and the two would meet for the first time at the picnic. Games such as crack the whip were played and Martinelli was served with homemade cookies and sandwiches. In the early 90s, the program evolved to the big sisters bringing the main entrée and the little sisters brought desserts and drinks. In 2005, Big/Little Sisters was paired with another loved tradition, Greek and Romans. Instead of having just one Big or Little, girls had entire families of four to five members to encompass all three divisions, Lower, Middle, and Upper, for the first time. In 2006, the program evolved to multiple events over the course of the year like holiday card-making, questionnaires, parachutes, sidewalk chalk, ultimate Frisbee, bracelet making, and a variety of sports. Regardless of the activities the program has included, eating, talking, laughing, games have always been at the center, all of which create lasting friendships.
