Celebrating Ultimate Pi Day at Bethany Christian School

Friday, March 13, 2015, was the celebration of Ultimate Pi Day at Bethany Christian School in Sierra Madre. This year, for an instant, the date and time lined up to represent the first 10 digits of pi, creating a literal once in a lifetime moment. Bethany’s S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, math) coordinator, Jonathan Hawes, could not let that ‘Ultimate’ moment slip by, so the BCS Pi Day celebration was bigger than ever.

BCS parents whose vocation or hobby is in the field of math or science spent the morning operating a rotation of hands-on science experiences for every BCS student preschool

through 8th grade. From blowing bubbles with dry ice to the science behind what makes fireworks so beautiful, students watched and touched and lived science, up close and personal, under the expert direction of people who do it every day.

The annual Pi Day celebration also included a student science fair featuring collaborative class projects submitted by grades K-5 and individual projects submitted by middle school students. Middle school winners at the school level will go on to complete regionally at Biola University in an

ACSI sponsored competition.

No Pi Day celebration would be complete without pie, so the morning activities included a pie baking contest and lots of pie eating which was enjoyed by the students and staff as well as the family and friends in attendance.
