Chinese School of San Marino’s Annual Chinese New Year Carnival

Please join us on Saturday, February 6th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Huntington Middle School for our annual Chinese New Year Carnival. There will be Dragon dancers, Valentine School’s performers, Chinese School’s student musicians, and other special guests. Bring your family, bring the kids/grandkids, and experience Chinese New Year with us!

The year of the Monkey starts on February 8th, 2016 on the Chinese Lunar calendar. Every year, the Chinese School of San Marino (CSSM) invites the community to come to our Carnival to celebrate with Music, Chinese food, and games for the kids. This fundraising event is brought to you by the Chinese Club of San Marino, the CSSM PTA, and made possible with parent and student volunteers. Entry is free, tickets to play games and enjoy foods are $1 each, and all proceeds benefit our after school cultural classes and other PTA events such as the Chinese Movie night and Teachers’ appreciation luncheon.

Since Chinese New year is usually during the American school year, many of our kids are not able to experience the true meaning of “Chinese New Year.” In Asia, the Chinese New year holiday lasts for almost two weeks. People prepare for it by cleaning the house, buying special grocery items, having a big family dinner with loved ones, and giving “red envelopes” to show our appreciation to others and for good luck.

The poster above was created by an 8 year-old Carver student, Jennifer Wang. She won because of her wonderfully accurate depiction of a traditional New Year’s Eve dinner with Fish, Dumplings, Hotpot, and other “lucky” foods. The CSSM PTA encourages all Chinese School students to participate in our Carnival poster contest, this year we had 28 entries!

I hope you will come and support our CSSM PTA!

Sincerely,
Yvonne Cheng
(CSSM PTA President 2015-16)
