Eliot Arts Magnet presents The Postcard Project on Saturday February 1, 2020, 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Altadena Library (600 E. Mariposa St., Altadena).
Eliot Arts Magnet will be celebrating Room 13 student artwork displayed in the Altadena Library for the month of January until February 28 with their very first Art Reception and Postcard Auction Fundraiser – a silent auction to bid on student artwork to raise money for the studio on Saturday, February 1, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The Postcard Project was started before break when Ms. Liane happened to come across various postcard-sized artwork on the internet and thought it would be a great way to introduce the talents of the students to the rest of the community by selling pocket sized art pieces made by hand. Similar to the idea of Artist Trading cards, the project proved popular and a big hit with the students, as the small size of the artwork lends itself to experimentation and different techniques, and students find it easy to tackle and fun to try new ideas rather than painting on a huge canvas, which can be intimidating to work on and difficult to finish.
These “fun-sized” art pieces are wonderful ways the students can share a piece of themselves while also spreading their wings with new media and new compositions, all on easy to create portable postcards. Students created these in a variety of media: from ink on recycled books, to acrylic paint, watercolor and gouache that are perfect for gifts and look great displayed as a collection, a sneak peak of which is shown above. Bids will start at $5 per piece (cash only), and some were created as a series of art pieces, so be sure to bring enough cash if you want to collect all of the pieces in the series – (be warned– they’re ADORABLE — and it may be hard to stop just at one!) What’s also great about these pieces is that you can really see stylistically how students are developing as artists, and it makes me very excited to see how they will grow and flourish as they progress in the studio this upcoming semester.
Eliot Arts Magnet Academy will need parent help to organize this event, as the school would like to have refreshments and help setting up (3:30pm – 4pm) and cleanup afterwards (5:30pm – 6:00pm), so a sign-up will be emailed shortly. Please invite all your friends and family to support Eliot Arts Magnet students! This event is meant to be a great opportunity for the students to show off their artwork to the public, and to also get an experience of what a real artist would experience at their own show, selling their artwork to buyers and mingling with the public.
