Exceptional Students and Faculty Honored at Flintridge Prep’s High School Awards Ceremony

Before the rush of finals, Flintridge Prep students and faculty took time Thursday to celebrate their peers at the annual Awards Ceremony. The Class of 2016 was officially granted seniority, as class officers were sworn in and the new seniors stormed their honorary patio.

At the ceremony, front office manager Madeline Barraclough was honored as the Detoy Award winner, given for outstanding personal and professional contributions to the school. Headmaster Peter Bachmann noted Barraclough’s long tenure at the school and her invaluable contributions to the entire faculty, staff, student body and parents organizations. “Day in and day out, she’s offered a warm, impish voice to playfully tease us all each day, reminding us to take our work seriously, but not ourselves,” he said.

History teacher and cross country/swimming coach Ingrid Herskind was awarded the first-ever Scott Studenmund ’08 Memorial Award, to honor a coach who promotes the passions and ideals that Scott embodied, including a love of athletics, contagious enthusiasm, a commitment to fairness and fervent patriotism. Studenmund made the ultimate sacrifice for his country on June 9, 2014, in Afghanistan. Bachmann noted Herskind’s incredible talents as a teacher and a coach. He said, “Her real genius as a coach is as a champion of human development, with her deep understanding of the individual needs of each athlete. She wants to win, but she insists upon good character.”

The Class of 1987 Award, nominated by faculty and voted on by students, was given to Peter Vaughn for his outstanding service to the school this year. Dean of Studies Sarah Cooper says, “Students talk about how their minds stretched in his class, and they equally remember how he made them feel: lit up by the text, and alive as human beings.”

Athletics Director Alex Rivera announced the JP Blecksmith ’99 Memorial Award winner, Lauren Stiles ’16, recognizing the rising senior athlete who stands out as a leader and a scholar. Jack Van Scoter ’16 was awarded Athlete of the Year award for his impressive contributions to the cross country and track teams.

Ian McGrew-Yule ’17 earned the Amherst Book Prize, which is awarded to a sophomore who demonstrates genuine intellectual curiosity and a passion for learning.

Sarah Kersting ’16 earned the Harvard Price Book Award, which is given to an outstanding junior who combines scholastic ability, high character and extracurricular involvement.

Christopher Turner ’16 earned the Student Leadership Award for his service as the assistant commissioner general.

Hamilton Evans ’16 was sworn in as senior class president in the traditional Scroll and Gavel Ceremony, performed by the 2015 senior president, Kevin Park. Also accepting new positions were Nanita Balagopal ‘16, Jonathan Ting ‘16 and Alexandra Beverlin ’16, who were sworn in as commissioners.

The awards ceremony ended with another tradition, the takeover of the Senior Patio and Lawn by the Class of 2016.
