Fifth-graders in Junior Orchestra recently represented Poly at a regional festival sponsored by the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association. Held at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley, the festival gave Poly’s young musicians an opportunity to prepare and perform three concert pieces, for which they received a “superior” rating from each of the three judges.
Along with written comments as well as recorded ratings from the judges, the orchestra also participated in the most nerve-wracking component of the festival – sightreading. For this event, students were given music they had never seen before and were required to play the entire piece with no practice at all. The orchestra musicians rose to the occasion and earned the highest possible score, a “superior” rating, for their concentration and fine attention to detail.
