Flintridge Prep Cross Country Teams Make School History with CIF Victories

Alumni, families, faculty and friends turned out Saturday morning for a great day at Mt. SAC, when, for the first time in school history, both the girls’ and boys’ cross country teams won first-place honors in CIF-SS Division V meet.

Both teams have long histories of strong finishes but have never held the title at the same time until this year. The boys last won CIF in 2004 and the girls last won in 2005.

This year, in the girls’ race, Flintridge Prep had four top-10 finishes in the meet: Natalie O’Brien ’17 (4th place), Ashley Lara ’15 (5th place), Maia Cohen ’17 (9th place) and Lacy Coan ’15 (10th place). Placing in the top 10 earns all these girls All-CIF honors. They beat Woodcrest Christian 52-117.

Coach Mike Roffina pointed out that just two Prep girls’ teams in any sport have earned first-place honors in CIF-SS. They are the 2005 and 2013 girls’ cross country teams.

“We have a wonderful, exciting team, and we’ve had an exciting season,” Roffina says. “We hope to do well at State.”

Alan Yoho ’14 won the boys’ Division V race, with his sophomore teammate, Jack Van Scoter ’16, close at his heels. This, too, is history making. Yoho won the school’s first-ever individual Southern Section Championship in cross country, and the runner-up Van Scoter is a sophomore who finished just 9 seconds behind. Other strong finishers include Nikhil Poole ’16 (13th), Tyler Fong ’14 (14th), Riley Coan ’17 (30th), Rab Moran ’16 (48th), and Shyam Patel ‘16 (54th).

We had an unnerving start, but we finished well overall,” says Coach Ingrid Herskind. “We have a young team that has been nicely guided by our two seniors. We’re looking forward to Saturday.”

Both teams will compete at the State meet on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.
