Flintridge Prep Cross Country Teams Win Historic State Championships
Both the Flintridge Preparatory School’s girls and the boys cross country teams have secured historic CIF Division 5 State Championships in cross country.
The girls’ victory is the second in a row and broke a Division 5 record for team time, with 95 minutes, 58.9 seconds. The team scored 67 points to beat St. Joseph (143) and Francis (155). With no seniors graduating, the team’s legacy as a powerhouse is secured.
Flintridge Prep had three top-20 finishers: Sophie Gitlin ’18 (7th), Natalie O’Brien ’17 (8th), and Sasha Codiga ’19 (11th). Maia Cohen ’17 and Jenna Mijares ’19 took 24th and 25th place. Gitlin and O’Brien recorded all-state performances.
For the boys, it was the fifth CIF state title and the first since 2004. The team time of 79 minutes, 40.08 seconds set a Division 5 record, as well. The victory cements the team as the winningest in division history, with a record 15 podium finishes in 19 years. The team scored 43 points to beat Marin (168) and Desert Christian (176).
Jack Van Scoter ’16 was a split second out of the lead to take 2nd place in the race. His time was third-fastest time in division history and eclipsed the school record set by Alan Yoho ’13, set in 2013.
Evan Patinelli ’18 placed 9th, Nikhil Poole ’16 placed 11th, Jonathan Vahala ’17 placed 17th and Rab Moran ’16 came in 22nd.
