Flintridge Prep Students Bring the Energy in Once Upon a Mattress

After months of preparation, the cast of Flintridge Preparatory School’s Once Upon a Mattress wowed sold-out crowds with an energetic and engaging musical production.

Once Upon a Mattress, by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller with music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer, tells the “real story” of The Princess and the Pea, in which a controlling Queen Aggravain (Galey Caverly ’14 and Thea Goddard ‘14) makes it nearly impossible for her wimpy son, Prince Dauntless (William Bremer ‘14 and Christopher Zaro ‘15) to find a wife. She rules out eligible princesses by creating exacting, near-impossible tests for each candidate, much to the frustration of the townspeople, none of whom can marry until the prince finds a mate. In the end, Princess Winnifred (Nanita Balagopal ’16 and Sophie Heflin ‘14) is expected to prove her sensitivity by feeling out a single pea that rests below the 20 fluffy mattresses on which she is meant to sleep.

Along the way, the cast tells an often hilarious, though sometimes serious, story of love, marriage and relationships. The more than 50 members of the cast and crew, along with Director Rob Lewis and Music Director Steve Hill, worked tirelessly to produce the fun, high-energy show.
