Gooden School Students Celebrate Veterans in Sierra Madre’s 4th of July Parade

Veterans serving as Grand Marshals in this year’s Sierra Madre 4th of July Parade will be heralded in style as they march the 1.3 miles of the parade route.

Nearly 20 student band members, grades 5 – 8, from The Gooden School will precede them playing patriotic tunes.

One student may just steal the show however, as 10-year-old tuba player Daniel Kyle, of Sierra Madre, will be riding in a Red Flyer wagon.

“That tuba is just too heavy for him to carry for more than a mile,” said Gooden School bandleader and music teacher Nadya Ewen, who arranged for the wagon.

Gooden school families will follow the band in the parade “on foot, in wagons, on decorated tricycles, bicycles and scooters. It’s a lot of fun!” said Ewen.

A small town event that brings Norman Rockwell to mind, the City of Sierra Madre touts the parade on its website:

The Sierra Madre 4th of July Parade is an annual tradition and represents the hometown spirit of the Sierra Madre community! The parade features community members, organizations, classic cars, a marching band, kids on their decorated bikes and so much more. Parade participation is open to all – young, young-at-heart, and everything in between.

The parade will take place from 10:00 am – 12:00 noon, Thursday, July 4. The parade route begins at the corner of Sierra Madre Blvd. and Sunnyside Avenue, and will travel the length of Sierra Madre Blvd. to Sierra Vista Park, in Sierra Madre.

Established in 1975, The Gooden School offers a classical education for the 21st Century. The independent Episcopal school, K – 8th grade, is located at 192 N. Baldwin Avenue, in Sierra Madre. For more information, visit www.goodenschool.org or call (626) 355-2410.
