Immaculate Heart High School's Speech and Debate Team Competes in Debate State Qualifier Invitational Tournament

Sophomores Maya Matthews and Sofia Yanez have qualified to compete at the California State Debate Tournament in Public Forum.

Senior Mia Speier was named league champion, and will be competing in Lincoln Douglas debate at State.

Over the weekend, members of Immaculate Heart High School’s Speech and Debate team competed in the Debate State Qualifier Invitational Tournament at Narbonne High School.

Thanks to their outstanding performances, sophomores Maya Matthews and Sofia Yanez and senior Mia Speier all qualified to compete at the California High School Speech Association State Tournament.

Matthews and Yanez qualified in Public Forum, and Speier, who was named league champion, qualified in Lincoln Douglas debate.

“They have been working really hard,” team coach Ellen Ivens-Duran, Class of 2012, said. “I’m proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

Immaculate Heart congratulates its hardworking Speech and Debate team! Their efforts this season have been truly remarkable, and the school is looking forward to cheering them on at State.
