The credit union’s internship program gives local high school students a chance to experience working in a financial institution, learn job skills and work with professional mentors. This year, La’Tiara Allen and Lauryn Miller were the first two interns in PSFCU’s summer program. This internship program is a partnership between the credit union, John Muir High School and the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce.

“We’re connecting the classroom to the real world,” said Andy Tien, Vice President of Marketing.

The student’s internship experiences also tie into the John Muir school curriculum where students run a virtual enterprise in their senior year. This program teaches students soft skills like interpersonal relations, communication and introductions as well as concrete skills like marketing, customer service and how to write a business plan.

Allen and Miller explain that their experiences at PSFCU have helped them in their virtual enterprise class as well as in their college search. They agree that their internship experience reinforced the value of good communication, professional behavior and responsibility.

“I feel that the organizational and communication skills I learned will also be important in the career I’m seeking, “said Miller, who hopes to be a nurse.

The internship program gave students a chance to observe different leadership styles and interoffice relations; but it was also a learning opportunity for the PSFCU staff. They are looking forward to working closely with students for their next cycle of summer interns.

“I learned a lot and would like to encourage other students to get involved with Pasadena Service Federal Credit Union,” said Allen.
