For the 2018-2019 school year, La Cañada High School’s lunch periods for 7/8 and 9-12 will be switched. High School lunch will be from 11:39 a.m. to 12:09 p.m. Over the past school year, school staff from both the high school and the 7/8 reviewed the bell schedule, looking at the late start as well as the placement of the lunch periods for both groups of students.
For several years, the 7/8 students have had three classes after lunch, many of which were core academic courses, and the high school students have only had two classes. After careful data analysis, talking with school leaders, and the 7/8 and 9-12 student body, it was determined that 7/8 students would benefit from only having two classes after lunch. One of the primary reasons for this decision was based on the course load analysis of the 9-12 students. Over 75% of the 9-12 students are participating in a sport, have CIF release, or have an early release for their sixth period class. However, 100% of the 7/8 students must be in a traditional classroom because a sixth period PE class is not possible due to field usage for high school athletics.
This change will have minimal impact on student scheduling and allow for younger students to be more alert and attentive in their afternoon academic courses. The LCHS Administration will use the 2018-19 school year to evaluate the effectiveness of the change and will continue to have an open dialogue with student leaders through ASB and parents through PTSA.
An updated bell schedule will be available via the school website.
