On the weekend of April 28-30, the Maranatha Speech and Debate Team sent seniors Cameron Chen, Matthew Harrington, and sophomore Deven Hollimon to compete in the State Championship Speech and Debate Tournament at Arcadia High School. Each of these students worked extremely hard to get to this level of competition by being a top debater at the State Qualification Tournament that was held in March. At the State Qualifier, Cameron Chen finished 4th overall and Harrington and Hollimon were undefeated and finished in first place to then advance to the State Tournament. Deven Hollimon was the only non-senior to represent the Southern California Debate League from the 123 SCDL League Qualifiers. The State Tournament contained 1,002 entries from 65 schools from all over California. MHS Speech and Debate Coach Patrick Mesisca ‘92 said, “I am extremely proud of the accomplishments of our Speech and Debate team this year and I know with the communication skills we are developing in our students at Maranatha that we have a bright future as a team in competitive tournaments. But more importantly, our students are learning critical life-long skills in oral communication that will serve them in their future after high school.”

Maranatha is offering a three week Speech and Debate summer course June 19-July 7 taught by MHS’s Speech and Debate Team coach Patrick Mesisca. The course will help students develop public speaking and debate skills that will make them more effective communicators.
