Maranatha High School Student Places 5th in Chess Tournament

Congratulations to sophomore Jack Ding who recently placed 5th in the 49th annual 2013 American Open Chess Tournament held in Anaheim. The American Open Tournament is composed of three divisions: Booster, Junior Varsity, and Varsity.

This was Jack’s first tournament and he participated in the Junior Varsity section which is for intermediate players that hold an active USCF (U.S. Chess Federation) membership. He competed with 242 Junior Varsity participants and 34 others who made it to the final of the K-12 rated U1200 division.

The tournament was run with a USCF 5 Round Swiss System with a time control of 30 minutes per game.

Jack is a member of Maranatha’s Chess Club and plans to participate in more tournaments in the future. Since he is taking ASL class in school, he also hopes to teach chess to Deaf students through Sign Language.
